A Recap of the Nashville eCommerce Campfire

It was an event to remember at the Nashville eCommerce Campfire. Under the lights of Fat Bottom Brewing, industry experts and competitive retailers came together to explore and exchange ideas about the future of eCommerce.

As we move into the holiday season and 2020, there are some major changes coming to the eCommerce arena. Magento 1 is coming to a close as more retailers move to their M2 platform, meanwhile, Shopify is adding a slew of new features to their arsenal. All of this and more force retailers to constantly be on their toes and looking for unique ways to stand out against the noise. That is why we congregate around the campfire, and this one did not disappoint.

So if you’re looking to get a leg up on the competition or keep a pulse on what’s happening, here are a few insights we uncovered at this year’s campfire.

“A trend that we have seen arise is customer referrals—where people refer their friends. As more users lean on ad blockers, brands have to find alternative paths to get to their customers. Referral programs don’t rely on any paid form of advertising, but rather word of mouth and social, which is more cost-effective in the long term.”

“One thing that we see coming down the pipe is that brands are moving outside of the United States. Yes, it is hard to quickly transition into the international market, but it is not impossible. Start small by selling a few select products to Canada, see how that process works around sales tax and global transactions, so you can uncover how to operate moving forward.”

– Matt Davis, Avalara

“Performance will matter more than ever. With the move to 5G cell phone networks, people’s phones will be moving at insane speed & bandwidth, but if your site is slow—which is not exclusively based on the speed of the network accessing it, but also your servers and page construction—you will be left behind.”

-Daniel Augustine, Gauge

Absorb these, think about where it is you want to take your team in the next year. Maybe your focus is marketing and you need to find a way to be unique in your space. Maybe you’re in need of a new CMS system like Magento or Shopify. Don’t settle for staying stagnant. In the wild world of eCommerce, nothing is set in stone, it’s just a matter of carving out your own path.
